A God given language?
In Hebrew there is a saying “Lashon HaKodesh” means the Holy Tongue. The reason being that the Hebrew language is God inspired and not man-made or developed. According to the Bible there was one language until God dispersed the people at the tower of Babel by giving them different languages. The original language being Hebrew according to some Jewish tradition.
The one fact that is undisputable is that the Bible was written in Hebrew. This is undergirded by numerous archaeological discoveries e. g. the Isaiah scroll. Another is the Mount Ebal Curse Tablet 12th Century BCE unveiled in 2022. It is a tiny, folded lead amulet that was discovered at Mount Ebal (near Shechem) and it contains a proto-alphabetic inscription featuring the Hebrew name of God, “YHWH”. Scholars date the artefact to approximately 1200 BCE, probably the oldest Hebrew text.
The outstanding characteristic of the Hebrew language is that it is God focused. The only requirement is that the one reading it should also be God focused in order to appreciate it. We consider ourselves lovers of God and His Word, we recognize Israel as God’s chosen nation. We however are not fluent in Hebrew, but the Bible says that the Lord use those who are willing vessels, not necessarily able vessels. In 2013 while staying in Israel, the Lord revealed something special about the Hebrew language embedded in scripture.
The first thing we recognized after we bought a Hebrew bible, was the description on the outside “sepher habriot”, the book of the covenants. The perfect description as the Bible explains the covenant God established with man.
We started to investigate the Hebrew bible with the desire to know more regarding God and His Word, knowing that Jesus is the Word that became flesh. We decided to start in the beginning. Since we could not read Hebrew we would take each individual word and focus on it to learn the meaning of the Word, rather than the structure of the sentence. Genesis 1:1 “Bereshit” translated as in the beginning, refers to the Head of all things, or can be translated to first and foremost. The second word is “Bara” translated as create. Interestingly, this Word is only used in connection with God, for it is only God that creates out of nothing. So “Bara” means to create something from nothing while humans can only form, shape or make something new out of something that already exist. The next word “Elohim” refer to God in the plural form. Even though we recognize God as one God we also acknowledge God as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The next Word “et” was not translated in the English bible and this became the turning point for us, realizing that God used the Hebrew language to reveal the end from the beginning i.e. His covenant with man. The Word “et” consist of an Aleph, the first letter, and a Tav, the last letter, in the Hebrew alfabet.
The first thought that came to mind concerning “et” was that Jesus said He is the Aleph and the Tav (The Alpha and Omega) or the beginning and the end. However the word “et” is found in numerous places therefore we asked the Lord to show us the meaning. I discovered the meaning according to the Hebrew pictograph. The “aleph” in the pictograph is a bull head, that suggest strength/strong and leadership the “tav” in the pictograph is a cross as a signature or covenant. Together “et” means a strong covenant, a mind-blowing revelation! God kept everything in accordance to the covenant He made when He called it into existence. In John 1 Jesus is revealed as the Word of God through whom all things came into existence and exists.
Hebrew 1:3 AMP aptly describes the glory and magnificence of Jesus at the right hand of Father God in His Majesty on High! “The Son is the radiance and only expression of the glory of [our awesome] God [reflecting God’s Shekinah glory, the Light-being, the brilliant light of the divine], and the exact representation and perfect imprint of His [Father’s] essence, and upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal]. When He [Himself and no other] had [by offering Himself on the cross as a sacrifice for sin] accomplished purification from sins and established our freedom from guilt, He sat down [revealing His completed work] at the right hand of the Majesty on high [revealing His Divine authority]”
In Jeremiah 31:33 God revealed that He is going to establish a new covenant, as an everlasting covenant, meaning that the covenant will be established and kept by God. This new covenant of the promise was demonstrated to Abraham in Genesis 15. It is considered a unique event because God unilaterally bound Himself to the promises, requiring nothing of Abraham except faith. In Revelation Jesus told the apostle John that He is the Aleph and the Tav, meaning that He is the strong covenant that God established for all mankind, so that all may be saved in Jesus Christ through faith alone. In considering the mentioned we realized that God used the Hebrew language to give mankind the revelation needed to be able to understand His perfect will.
We then continued to seek the revealed truth in God’s Word using the Hebrew language and found the Word “davar” in reference to God’s Word/orders. Again in the Hebrew mind-set the word “davar” is an active word, meaning it has power. We acknowledge that Jesus is the Word that became flesh, so Jesus is the active power that creates. Jesus however said about Himself that He is the only way to the Father. The Hebrew pictograph writes the word “davar” as a door, a house and a bigger head over a smaller head, in one sentence it can be read as “the door to the house of the head”. Jesus is the door to the House of Father God who is the head. This explanation of the Hebrew language gives us direct access to the truth amplified, so that we can be set free by the truth.
The next word, “emet” means truth in Hebrew consisting of three Hebrew letters. The first is the Aleph, then the Mem and it ends with the Tav. In the Hebrew rabbinical circles the word symbolize the “seal of God,” in that the Aleph is in the beginning, the Tav at the end and the Mem in the middle of the Hebrew alphabet. If you remove the first letter, the Aleph that symbolizes God’s infinity, the remaining word is met meaning death. So in the Hebrew rabbinical circles it means that without God there only death that remains.
In considering the pictograph the meaning is even more profound with direct meaning to our salvation in Christ Jesus. The Aleph is the symbol of leader and strength, the Mem is the symbol of water or blood and the Tav is the covenant. The translation of the pictograph means, the truth is revealed in the strength of the blood covenant, in Christ Jesus.
In this introduction we have only dealt with 3 Hebrew words and their profound meaning, directing us to Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah. We trust that the meaning of the mentioned words will help you to understand that God in His wisdom explained and illustrates that Israel is His key witness and even the Hebrew language witness concerning God and His covenant plan for mankind.
